ISAIAH 61:11: “For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations.” (ESV)
OBSERVATION: There is a Day coming when all wrongs will be made right. There is a Day coming when righteousness and praise will sprout up like the grass of the fields among all nations. There is a Day coming when peace shall reign – because the Prince of Peace will reign! This is the blessed hope and assurance of all those who call upon the name of Jesus Christ. This is the coming reality, proclaimed in Scripture, and received by faith.
Some think this to be simply foolish or fanciful thinking. Even some believers have difficulty truly believing this. When you look at the condition of this world, when you hear the constant bombardment of bad news each day, even the most stalwart in faith sometimes deals with some doubt. Yet, this does not change the truth of God’s Word. The flower withers, and the grass fades, but the Word of the Lord endures forever. As surely as Jesus came to this world to die for our sins, He will come again to once and for all judge sin and redeem this fallen world. He will come again to establish His Kingdom of Righteousness!
So what do we do in the meantime? As believers, those who look for this blessed hope, do we simply give up on this present world? This is what I fear many have done. We know the prophesies proclaiming that in the last days things will grow progressively worse. There is really nothing we can do. So, the logical conclusion is to find a safe enclave of fellow believers and hide out till he comes. Is this the right thing to do? ABSOLUTELY NOT! We need to hear the words of Jesus now more than ever before.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9 ESV
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 ESV
“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.” Matthew 24:45-46 ESV
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’” Matthew 25:34-40 ESV
“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Matthew 28:18-19 ESV
The teaching of Jesus is clear. As we await His return we are to remain busy doing the work of His Kingdom. We are to be those who promote and work for peace. We are to be faithfully engaged in this world using all of our gifts and talents to their full potential giving glory to God. We are to be active in helping the poor and afflicted and reaching out to those who are forgotten and marginalized by our world. And we are to be engaged in the Harvest Field of the Kingdom, making disciples in all nations, proclaiming the Gospel, inviting all to faith in Jesus Christ so that they might be able to partake in the marriage supper of the Lamb.
This is not a time for hiding and waiting. This is a time for engaging and counting the cost of being a true disciple of Jesus Christ. This is a time to put our hand to the plow and finish the work that He has given us – until He returns!
In Jesus Name!
