PSALM 32:6-7: “For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: Surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.” KJV
OBSERVATION: I did not stay up to watch the election results this year. It is no secret that I am a Conservative Christian and my political values mirror my spiritual ones. I support the sanctity of human life, personal freedom, liberty, and marriage and family as defined by the Bible. Needless to say, the result of this year’s election was the polar opposite of these views.
I am not angry about the election results. Ultimately, God allows us free choice, and He gives us the leaders we, as a nation, desire in our hearts. When Israel rejected God, He gave them the king they desired. David, Solomon (to some extent), and a few others were good kings. However, most of Israel and Judah’s kings led the nation down a path that ultimately led to their destruction. All of this was avoidable, but it was also a reflection of the heart condition of her people.
Another observation struck me as I thought about this past election. Immediately, the side that does not support Biblical values in the public square took to Facebook and X and continued hurling hateful accusations against those with a different opinion (Biblical values). Yet, conservatives (with Biblical values) did not take to the streets and burn cities and loot businesses.
I think most people, like me, needed time to reflect and think about what had just happened.
I have gleaned two lessons from this past week’s election. First, I need to look inwardly and search my own heart. My position must always be to put God first, love others, and desire to further the Kingdom of God. There is no room for hatred or despair in my heart if I am going to be able to do this.
Second, I must confess any trust I have placed in politicians or the political system. My trust must be anchored in Christ alone. If I place my hope and trust in a candidate or a political party, this becomes an idol that I must lay at the foot of the Cross! My hope, my faith, my anchor in life must always be Jesus Christ. He alone is the foundation upon which I must build my life. All other ground is sinking sand.
So what do I do now?
I continue doing what I always have done. This election cycle does not change my direction or my commitments. It also does not affect or change God’s call in my life. If anything, it renews it, fans the flames of my commitment to the Lord, and redirects my heart to the Harvest!
As I read Psalm 32 this morning, I find great comfort. I have somewhere to go in the times life seems hard to understand, when there is confusion, or when it seems the way is lost. I can enter the presence of the Lord in prayer; I can focus my heart upon His Word; I can take comfort in the fact that…
I have a divine Hiding Place!
“For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: Surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.“ (Psalm 32:6-7 KJV)
No, I won’t be posting angry memes on Facebook or X. I won’t be protesting in the streets. I won’t be burning down my city. I will be running to my hiding place. It is not a place where I hide FROM the world. It is a place I hide IN His presence so I can continue to be effective IN the world.
Only when I allow God to create in me a clean heart can I truly be a light to a world that is lost in darkness.
Heavenly Father, this morning I run into Your presence. Comfort me, guide me, change me, and empower me in the Holy Spirit to continue sharing the love of Jesus Christ with a world that is lost in sin. May these recent events turn hearts to You and renew my focus and calling to the Harvest of souls.
In Jesus’ Name!
