THE FOOLISHNESS OF CHRIST…(A reflection on the Roe-v-Wade decision.)

I CORINTHIANS 1:21-25: “For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” NKJV
‭‭
OBSERVATION: As a Christian have you ever felt foolish? Have you wondered why friends and family members don’t understand why you believe the way you do? Do you find yourself among the marginalized in our present culture? Has all of this at times seemed daunting and caused you to question your positions and understanding of the Scriptures?

Yesterday, June 24, 2022, was a historic day in the history of the United States. A controversial Supreme Court ruling, Roe-v-Wade, was overturned in a 6-3 decision. The basic premise of the original ruling was that the right for a woman to have an abortion was a Constitutional right. This began a decades-long battle between Pro-Choice and Pro-Life groups. The majority of Pro-Life groups were Christian groups. Those who held a Pro-Life position were both vilified and marginalized in the media. Meanwhile, as the debate raged on millions of innocent babies were aborted and killed.

Then all hell broke loose!

With the momentous decision of June 24, 2022, Facebook became an inferno of fiery discourse. The angry voices of those who had lost the debate came in like a flood. People threatened to cut off anyone who disagreed with them. Friends and family members found themselves pitted against one another in their opinions. The media piled on this bandwagon with their own brand of fear-mongering. Politicians warned that we were entering a dark age as they called June 24 one of the darkest days in human history.

Everything seemed so upside down! Why?

Although the verses noted above do not deal with the issue of abortion, they do give us the insight behind the heart of the great divide in our culture. The Christian view of life is seen as foolishness in our culture. Why is this? It is because it is a view that puts the individual last and Jesus first. The present conventional wisdom of our culture sees this as evil. The rights of the individual come first! I need to be free to do what I want to do no matter what the cost is to another individual. If anyone gets in the way of my personal choices and freedom they are the source of evil. It does not matter what the outcome to someone else – the individual is always supreme!

The Christian’s position on life and the individual is completely the opposite of this. The message of the Gospel is a call to the cross of Jesus Christ. It is not only a call to believe in Jesus, placing our faith in His substitutionary death on the cross for our sins. It is much more than that. It is a call to follow Jesus. We must pick up our cross and follow Him. We must die to our selfishness and sin in order to live a life of surrender and service to others. The power of Christ’s love calls us to consider others first and to respect the life and worth of each and every individual – including the unborn!

So Paul reminds us,

  • “For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness…”

The message of the cross is abhorrent and foolish to the world. To put others’ needs before your own does not make sense. What about my rights? What about my body? What about what I want to do? To the Christ-follower all of this died at the foot of the cross. When we placed our faith in Jesus we died to our old way of living and thinking and rose to a new way of life. We experienced the true power of God and for the first time, we were able to see the reality of life and understand the value of life. We discovered the wisdom of God in Christ Jesus!

  • “…But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

While we can continue to engage in endless debate over the current issues, perhaps there is a better way. I believe the only way that someone will be able to understand the true value of life and the wisdom that is from above is if they encounter the cross of Jesus Christ. It is only at the foot of the cross that we discover our sin, His grace, and the wisdom of God. Without this encounter, we will continue to seek for signs and wisdom from a bankrupt world that has none to give. The true riches of wisdom and the value of human life are only found in Jesus Christ!

  • “But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.” I Corinthians‬ ‭1:30-31‬ ‭NKJV‬

Lord, lead me anew to the cross. Help me to die to myself and live fully unto You. Give me the ability to love others with the love that You exemplified as You cried out from the cross – “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Give me the courage to preach Christ crucified so that others may experience Your life, wisdom, and power!

In Jesus’ Name!

About Kirk's Devotional Journal
