PSALM 89:8-9: “O LORD God of Armies, who is like you? Mighty LORD, even your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule the raging sea. When its waves rise, you quiet them.” (GW)
OBSERVATION: Is God really in control? This is a question that everyone asks when they face time of great testing in their lives. When the storms of life are raging, it is easy to think the Lord has forgotten us. This is not the experience of merely the weak in faith. David, a man after God’s own heart felt this way many times. The Book of Psalms is a compilation of the honest cries of David’s heart.
The disciples also felt like this when they were battling a physical storm in a tiny boat. As they hurriedly and frantically bailed water to avoid sinking, Jesus was asleep in the boat. They ran to Jesus, woke Him up and said,
- “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to die?” (Mark 4:38 GW)
That is the natural human reaction when we feel alone, when we do not feel the presence of God, when we begin to wonder – “Is God really in control?”
Yet, the wonderful reality is – God always cares! God is always in control! God is never far from us! When the disciples cried out to the Lord he responded with a simple word – “Peace be still!” The waves that were raging, the wind that was blowing, the tossing and turning of this tiny boat were replaced with both a calm of the storm – and a calming of the heart.
Jesus asked them – “Where is your faith?” In essence He was asking, “Did you forget who was with you?” Jesus could sleep peacefully in the midst of the storm because He knew who was with Him. He knew that His Heavenly Father, and ours, was with Him. And He knew the Father intimately – for He and the Father were one! There was no doubt who was holding them in His hands.
- “O LORD God of Armies, who is like you? Mighty LORD, even your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule the raging sea. When its waves rise, you quiet them.” (GW)
When we face time of great trial and difficulty, when we do not sense the presence of God because we are n the midst of a raging storm, we must remember who is always holding us in His mighty hand. The God of Armies, the Mighty Lord holds us. His faithfulness surrounds Him. He rules the raging sea that is coming against our lives. And with just one word He can calm the most troubled and fearful heart – “Peace be still!”
- Faith is the assurance of this hope, the evidence of this promise when at the moment it is unseen!
Lord, quiet my heart this morning. Help me to lift my eyes upward, away from the raging see, and toward You. May my eyes of faith be enlightened to see You in all of Your splendor, glory, and faithfulness. May I rest in the strength of Your mighty hand, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies. May I hear the still small voice of your Holy Spirit speak to my heart – “Peace be still!” And may I trust You through the midst of the storm until You once again bring me to safe harbor.
In Jesus Name!
