HOW CAN I BE SUCCESSFUL?

PSALM 16:5-8: “The LORD is my inheritance and my cup. You are the one who determines my destiny. Your boundary lines mark out pleasant places for me. Indeed, my inheritance is something beautiful. I will praise the LORD, who advises me. My conscience warns me at night. I always keep the LORD in front of me. When he is by my side, I cannot be moved.” (GW)‭‭

OBSERVATION: How can I be successful?  What is the key to success? Is it going to the best college? Is it the connections that I make in business? Is it having the right financial advisor? Is it the sum total of my talents and skills? All of these may contribute in some way to a successful life, but they are not the key to success.

The key to success is understanding God’s will and direction for my life!

The Apostle Paul wrote – “If only in this life we have hope, we are of all men most miserable.” May I add, this also – “If only in this life we have success, we are of all men most disappointed.” Jesus said, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” The sum total of our success is not in what we do, what we accumulate, or in the sum total of our talents and skills.

The sum total of our success is only found when our lives are connected with our eternal destiny through Jesus Christ.

David knew this intimately. This is why he was called a man after God’s own heart. David proclaims – “The Lord is my inheritance and my cup!” David knew that his success was not found in any “thing”, but in “someone” – the One True God! And David knew the only way to achieve this “knowing” of God was to walk in His pathway for his life.

  • “You are the one who determines my destiny.”

God has a plan for each of our lives. He called Jeremiah from his mother’s womb. And before we were born He had an eternal destiny for our lives. The greatest call for a man or woman is to discover this destiny. Some pull back fearing that if they are not the ones calling the shots, determining their own destiny, that God will lead them to do something that will literally zap the joy right out of their lives. What a sad misconception of the heart and purposes of God. David knew this was not the case.

  • “Your boundary lines mark out pleasant places for me. Indeed, my inheritance is something beautiful.”

The call and destiny of God for each one of our lives will lead us to the ultimate place of fulfillment in our lives. It will lead us to “pleasant places“. It will produce in us something that is “beautiful“. As a young man I never dreamed I would be called to pastor a church. In fact, I resisted this call and fought it. I was going to be a broadcaster. I was going to be on the radio. This was the pathway I determined for my life!  However, when I surrendered to God’s call I found that the path He was calling me to was the only place I have ever found fulfillment. It is the only place that I have enjoyed true success in my heart and life.

So how do we each find this pathway? We are not all called to become pastors. God will call some to be broadcasters, professionals, teachers, craftsman, homemakers, etc.. The question is – “What can we do to discover His calling for our life and then begin to follow the Lord toward our personal destiny?” David continues in this Psalm and writes,

  • “I will praise the LORD, who advises me. My conscience warns me at night. I always keep the LORD in front of me.”

God has given us His Word, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, the gift of godly counsel in our spiritual leaders, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit working in our lives and our consciences to help lead us and guide us. David trusted in the leading of the Lord. His prayer was constantly for the Lord to correct him when he got off course, and to guide him on the path that would lead him into his destiny. You and I can do the same. The Lord has given each one of us these gifts and abilities. All we have to do is ask, listen, and begin to obey the leading of the Lord that is revealed to us – step by step, day by day! And as we do we can be assured that…

  • “When he is by my side, I cannot be moved!”

Lord, help me to hear Your voice and to receive Your counsel today as I continue to walk toward my eternal destiny. Speak to me through Your Word, through the still small voice of the Holy Spirit, through godly counsel, and through the spiritual gifts that You give as You will. Keep me on the pathway that leads me toward You, my eternal destiny, and my ultimate success!

In Jesus Name!
