MY PICK FOR PRESIDENT!

PROVERBS 8:13-16: “The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. I have counsel and sound wisdom; I have insight; I have strength. By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; by me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly.” (‭‭

OBSERVATION: Before you line up behind the next presidential candidate – consider the words of Proverbs! We are in the midst of another presidential campaign – and we are only in the primaries! It seems presidential campaigns are a bit like the holidays, they seem to begin earlier and earlier every cycle. It is only August and already I can sense the faint smell of peppermint and pine needles in the stores just waiting to break out! It seems like all we hear about in the news is the daily report of the many candidates that are vying for “The Spot” on their party’s ticket.

People are fed up with politics as usual. Both Christians and non-Christians alike feel that they have been betrayed by the empty promises of politicians that have said one thing and done another. There is a phenomenon that happens in politics when this sentiment is prevalent. It seems that people tend to look for someone who is polar opposite of their disappointment. The pendulum swings and many times the majority runs after the candidate who looks and sounds the least like the disappointing establishment – without really vetting or thinking about what the one they are lining up behind is really like.

The Bible is clear with warnings. Over and over again it reminds us. It is not – “The Economy Stupid”! Rather – it is “Morality and Character”! When a godly ruler sits in the place of power the people rejoice (Proverbs 29:2). When a leader “fears the Lord” he is more qualified to lead a country in the right direction than one who has all the degrees, all the rhetoric, or all the credentials that seem to be needed. This is something to be reminded about amidst the current “buzz” over certain key candidates. Note the qualities of a leader who “fears the Lord”:

He will hate evil…

He will not be proud or arrogant…

He will not be noted for perverse speech…

He will openly seek God’s wisdom, insight, and strength…

This is more important than all the worldly accomplishments one could possess. If you look over the truly great leaders of our country you will note an attitude of true humility, a dependence upon God, a reliance upon prayer, and an understanding of their office as a sacred stewardship of the people. This current election is no doubt entertaining. However, there have been elections in the past, in various countries, that have been entertaining, but have led to destruction. Before we repeat history – we should seek God’s wisdom. I truly believe that we need a qualified person to be president of our nation. However, we also need a person who exhibits the fear of the Lord and a true attitude of humility.

Lord, open our eyes to see. Give us discerning ears to hear. Let us look for a candidate that is competent, but one who also demonstrates true humility, integrity, and faith. There is no one who is perfect. However, one who fears the Lord holds greater credentials than one who boasts of great accomplishments. Give us discernment as we pray.

Lord, raise up a godly leader that will govern justly – FOR ALL!!  In Jesus Name!
