THE “SIXTH SENSE”

EPHESIANS 1:15-20: “For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, (‭ESV)

OBSERVATION: Have you ever heard the term – “the sixth sense”? This term has been used to talk about everything from the occult to just simple intuition. Yet, in a Biblical sense, there is a sixth sense. We all have the faculties of hearing, seeing, feeling, touching, tasting, and smelling. However, there remains a “sixth sense”. It is the “eyes of our hearts”. This is the unveiling of wisdom and understanding in our spirit. This is what Paul prays for – “…that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened…”

This “sixth sense” is not an ability that we develop. It is a gift that is given. It is given by God the Father to those who have received Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord. It is not “something” that we receive – it is “SOMEONE”! Note that Paul prays, asking the Father to give the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. This is the Holy Spirit that has been shed abroad in our hearts through faith. We are not called to embark on a quest to seek some “higher knowledge”. We are called to seek Jesus through the indwelling power and presence of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit;s inner and abiding presence in our lives is our “sixth sense”, so to speak. He alone opens and enlightens the “eyes of our hearts”, because He alone brings forth the new life and revelation of Jesus Christ into our lives.

“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.” (‭John‬ ‭15‬:‭26‬ ESV)

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (‭John‬ ‭16‬:‭13-15‬ ESV)

“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.” (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2‬:‭12-13‬ ESV)

Lord, there is so much that you want to reveal in my life. You want to open the “eyes of my heart” and allow me to see the wonders and riches of Jesus Christ in me, the power of His resurrection, the fellowship of His sufferings, that I might be made (in my old nature) conformable to His death, and alive (in my spirit) unto to God having obtained the righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

Lord, open the “eyes of my heart” this morning to see Jesus – “…Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.” (‭Ephesians‬ ‭1‬:‭21‬ ESV)

In Jesus Name!
