ARE YOU INTERESTED IN “SPIRITUAL THINGS”?

1 CORINTHIANS 12:1-3: “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.”

OBSERVATION: Are you interested in spiritual things? This is a question that most people will be open to talk about. In fact, we live in a world that is increasingly open to and interested in “spiritual things”. There is a growing hunger for the supernatural and spiritual phenomena that cannot be explained with the rational mind. A myriad of TV shows have come on the scene recently, and the book stores are filled with shelves of new age and “religious” books. We are living in exactly the same cultural backdrop that Paul is addressing as he writes these words to the Corinthian believers.

I recently returned from a trip to California for our church convention and our family vacation. We were in San Diego and visited a tourist area called Seaport Village. It is a harbor shopping area with a winding walk around the bay. Around the bayside area there were numerous tents set up. They were not vendors selling wares, they were fortune tellers and palm readers. They were doing a brisk business as people and couples consulted with them to find out about their future. We even overheard a father with two small daughters reading the horoscope to his children and telling them what type of day they would have. People are truly open to spiritual things.

The reality of spiritual things is they only have two sources. They can come from the living God, or from the pit of hell. They are either directed by the Holy Spirit, or they are directed by demons. Many recoil at this truth, but it is truth none the less. The reason many do not see it is because Satan and his demons always clothe themselves as angels of light. Yet, their methods and their ways always lead to death. There is one word that unmasks all of these deceivers – it is Jesus! Paul says no one speaking by the Spirit of God can call Jesus accursed. This is exactly what the world and all the false and deceptive spiritual counterfeits are doing. They are open to spiritual things until you mention the name of Jesus. Then – their true colors come out.

We are in a battle between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light. There is no middle ground in this battle. There is no need to look outside of Jesus Christ for spiritual meaning and fulfillment. All that we need, every gift, every provision of power, ever inner hunger is met in the person of Jesus Christ. The church must wake up and begin to once again earnestly desire spiritual gifts. I am not talking about more seminars. I am talking about surrendered believers moving in the gifting and power of the Holy Spirit. I am talking about a fresh release of the miraculous in and through our lives. I am talking about the power of Jesus Christ being manifest in His Church!

There is no more time to be led away by dumb idols. There is only one true God! There is only one Savior! There is only one Spirit! Everything else is a counterfeit created to lead us astray. Once you have discovered that which is authentic you have no desire to seek that which is a cheap counterfeit. Lord, give us the hunger and grace to seek You, to seek Your gifts, to live in the power of the Holy Spirit bringing glory to Jesus Christ!  Empower Your Church!  In Jesus Name!
