I CHRONICLES 21:6: “And there was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was descended from the giants.” (ESV)
OBSERVATION: Have you ever asked yourself – “When will all the battles end?” You just finish walking through one trial, you look forward to a time of peace, and then right around the corner you find another battle. The Philistines were like many of our issues in life. They kept coming back against Israel – over and over again. As David subdued the nations around Israel who had warred against them, the Philistines pulled out their “aces” – the giants that remained in the land.
David was no stranger to giants. As a young man he had defeated Goliath. Now in I Chronicles 21:4-8 we read of the remaining giants that try to oppose Israel. There is not just one – but three! And now they face the worst one of all – the six fingered, six toed super giant! It seems that there are times in life, when you feel like you just can’t face anything more. That is the time the dreaded six fingered, six toed super giant appears. There are only three choices we have when this happens. We can run. We can surrender. Or we can stand our ground in faith and defeat our enemy!
Our giants are not really people, although there may be people involved in the issues we face. Paul reminds us – “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12 ESV) The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but spiritual. We are called to put on the whole armor of God and to stand against the wiles and attacks of the enemy. God’s Word assures us that if we do – he (the enemy) will flee from us. This is the call of the child of God. It is our call to overcome through faith.
I bet when Abraham faced the fact that he was almost 100 years old, and he still did not have a son, he felt like he was facing the six fingered, six toed super giant once again. Yet, the Scriptures give us hope and the assurance of victory through faith. Romans 4 tells us – “He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” (Romans 4:19-22 ESV)
So this morning I speak to my heart in the face of my “giants” (even the six fingered, six toed super giant) – “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you!” “Cast your cares upon Him, for He cares for you!” “If God is for me, then who can be against me?!” Watch out giants! – Victory is mine through faith in my Lord Jesus Christ!
“Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 5:9-11 ESV)
In Jesus Name!
