THE ANOINTING OIL

ISAIAH 10:27: “It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.”

OBSERVATION: Paul writes in II Corinthians 3:17-18: “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

It is the Spirit of The Lord that breaks the yoke of bondage in our lives. Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins. He rose again to proclaim His complete victory over sin and death and to make the way of salvation available to all who place their faith in Him. Yet, He told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they received the “Promise of the Father” – the baptism, or outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon their lives. They were “born again” – but they had not yet been empowered.

In the Old Testament only the Prophet, Priest, or the King received the anointing oil. It was a symbol of their consecration to The Lord and the power of the Holy Spirit upon their lives. When Saul was anointed by Samuel, it is recorded that as he traveled he met a company of prophets and began to prophesy. David was anointed with oil, Aaron was anointed with oil, and we are now anointed with the heavenly oil of the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit takes place when we ask The Lord to endue us with this special “promise of the Father” (Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit dwells in the life of every believer, but every believer needs to be empowered or baptized with this “anointing oil” – the power of the Holy Spirit. This is what Jesus spoke of when He said – “…out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38)

Peter believed in Jesus. Yet, Peter, before he was baptized in the Holy Spirit, denied Christ 3 times. He lacked the power that breaks the yoke. When he was baptized in the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost – he preached the Gospel with a new power and anointing of the Spirit. 3000 were saved and baptized that day. The anointing oil broke the yoke of timidity in Peter’s life and the yoke of sin in the lives of those who heard the Gospel.

I need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, and I also need to be daily filled anew with the Holy Spirit. The victories I need in my life will not be accomplished by power, nor by might, but only by the Spirit of The Lord. It is the anointing oil that breaks the yoke! Lord, this morning, fill me anew with Your Spirit. Come and cleanse my life through the power of Your shed blood and fill my life with the anointing oil of Your indwelling presence. Help me to walk “after the Spirit” today in all that I do. Keep me close to You and let Your Word abide in me through the power of Your Spirit. Break every yoke I pray, In Jesus Name!
