WHEN I AM DEPRESSED…

PSALMS 3:3-4: ”But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head. I cried to the LORD with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill. Selah”

OBSERVATION: What do I do when I am depressed? Depression is an invisible enemy of our souls. It can come from a time of prolonged trial, sudden change, uncertainty, disappointment, and physical exhaustion, or a chemical imbalance in the brain. While there are forms of depression that need to be addressed medically, most of the time depression comes from our experiences in life.

Psalm 3 was written by David when he was fleeing his rebellious son Absalom who had usurped the throne. David was not only hurt emotionally by his son’s betrayal, David was exhausted as he found himself and his household on the run as they fled Jerusalem fleeing for safety and to avoid a confrontation with bloodshed.

David’s head was hanging low.

There is something about depression that changes one’s countenance. You can sense someone is depressed by a change in their physical stature and demeanor. It was in this depressed state that David reminded himself of God’s faithfulness, mercy, and grace.

“But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.”

In our times of trial, anguish, and depression, the true source of our strength and hope is in God alone. While one may need to take medicine for depression caused by physical conditions, even then the medicine is not the final answer. God alone is our shield and protection. He alone is our hope. The weight of His glory, His presence, His mercy, and His grace lifts our heads so that we can see beyond our depression and gives us hope!

Lord, this morning, be my shield and the lifter of my head!

In Jesus’ Name!

About Kirk's Devotional Journal

Kirk L. Zehnder is the Founder of Resurrection Christian Outreach. RCO is a ministry that promotes the growth and vitality of the local church through speaking engagements, seminars, various media tools, and written curriculum and books. This ministry was started over 35 years ago by Kirk as a means to strengthen the church that he was pastoring. It grew as Kirk began to share these tools with other churches. Today many of the materials are being used by local churches both nationally and internationally. Kirk's Devotional Journal is a result of struggling with Bible reading programs that never seemed to work. Kirk feels the Lord helped him discover an easy-to-follow program to Read, Reflect, Pray, and Journal through the Bible in one year. This program is called L.I.F.E. Unlike other programs there are no dates to follow. You can miss a day and still complete your reading. You never feel like the dates and verses you missed are chasing you. You are free to enjoy your daily Biblical journey and listen to the voice of The Lord. For more information on the L.I.F.E. plan, send an email to rcoutreach@aol.com. Kirk is also available for speaking engagements, seminars, and retreats. With over 40 years of professional business and pastoral ministry experience, Kirk brings a unique combination of practical wisdom, humor, and Biblical insight. If you would like Kirk to speak at your church, school, or ministry, please send an email to rcoutreach@aol.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible to discuss your opportunity.
