ROMANS 5:5: “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” NKJV
OBSERVATION: Have you ever lost hope? Have you found yourself in a place where you could not even think of the future? All you could see and think about was the present struggle you found yourself in. A sense of darkness overshadowed your dreams. Instead of hopefulness, you found yourself struggling with a growing feeling of hopelessness.

I think we have all experienced times like these. We liken them to the wandering of the children of Israel in the desert. Traveling in endless circles the scenery never seems to change. Each morning is met with more barrenness and dust. What happened to all the promises of a land, a future, filled with milk and honey? Has the Lord abandoned us – or is He at work in a way we do not understand?

As a Christ-follower, I must always submit my feelings to the truth and authority of God’s Word. This means that what God has spoken trumps what I am feeling. My feelings are fleeting and subject to the changing emotions and circumstances of my life. God’s Word is eternal and established from all eternity. Therefore, when my present circumstance does not match God’s Word – it is not God who needs to change –

It is I who need to change!

God’s Word proclaims this about hope – “Now hope does not disappoint!” There is a power in the hope that God gives us through Jesus Christ. It is a hope that sustains us through all the trials and difficulties of life. Hope, the assurance and expectation of a better future, is not merely a feeling we receive. It is the result of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in our life!

  • “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

The love of God, God’s very nature, has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has come to live within us when we placed our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is the tangible manifestation and fulfillment of Jesus’ promise,

  • “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13:5-6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

We can face all of life’s ups and downs with contentment, joy, and peace. Why? It is because we never have to face it alone. Jesus is with us every step of the way through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. We are constantly assured of His love for us and that He will fulfill all of His promises. The cycles of life, the times of wandering in the wilderness, do not move us away from the Father. These times cause us to grow in His grace and increase our hope!

  • “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans‬ ‭5:1-4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Notice the prominent position of hope in the process of life. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we have peace with God and are partakers of the grace of God. This grace causes us to be filled with joy and we are filled with the hope of the glory (the fulfilled promises) of God. It is then this hope that undergirds us in our times of tribulation. We don’t lose heart during these times because hope sustains us. This hope helps us to grow in perseverance and character and leads us to a deeper knowledge of God in our life.

This is the – POWER OF HOPE!

This hope never disappoints us. This is because the Lord never leaves us. He leads us each and every step of the way. We go from victory unto victory through the power of hope – because the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God and He leads us through every path of life, redeeming each step, as he fashions our life into the image of Jesus Christ!

The power of hope never disappoints because Jesus never leaves us or forsakes us. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in our life is our guarantee that He will lead us through the valley of the shadow of death into the green pastures of His abundant and eternal life. We may lose positions and possessions in this life – but we will never lose hope because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

And He will stay with us every step of the way until we exchange this hope carried in these vessels of clay for our eternal hope and the resurrection of the body on that final day.

This is the – POWER OF HOPE!

In Jesus’ Name!
