OBSERVATION: Everyone needs an anchor! This is one of the first things you learn when operating a boat. Without an anchor you simply will find yourself adrift, and subject to the ever changing winds and the tides. Even when you are docked, you need an anchor! How much truer is this as we navigate the turbulent storms and changes of life.

I wish life was a constant experience of smooth sailing. We would all like to live on the mountain tops of joy and peace, and avoid the valleys of difficulty and sorrow. Yet, we all will experience our share of joy, and our share of sorrow. It isn’t whether we can choose one and avoid the other.

The issue is, what will we do when faced with the one we don’t want?

The answer is to – CAST OUT YOUR ANCHOR! When the storms of life come, we need to batten down the hatches, and secure our anchor. What is the anchor for the believer’s life? It is the unchanging nature and love of God! Even though we cannot avoid the changes and challenges life has to throw at us, we can always know that we will navigate through them to safety – if we are anchored to the one who never changes!

Psalm 102 gives us a picture into the life of one who is at the deepest point of despair. Life does not seem fair, and it also doesn’t make any sense.

“LORD, hear my prayer!

May my cry for help come to you

Do not hide your face from me when I am in trouble.

Listen to me.

When I call to out you,

hurry to answer me!

For my days are vanishing like smoke;

my bones are charred as in a fireplace.

Withered like grass, my heart is overwhelmed,

and I have even forgotten to eat my food.” (Verse 1-4, ISV)

The Psalmist is so overwrought with grief and pain that sleep eludes him, and he no longer has an appetite for food. Life does not seem worth living for one whose days now only seem like a trail of smoke from the charred disappointments of life.

The Psalmist’s anchor is the unchanging faithfulness, love, and mercy of Almighty God. It is only the Lord who can bring hope in these times of deepest despair and darkness. He alone is the light that flickers in the distance and calls us to trust and continue moving in the direction of His grace. And as we do, healing begins to flow, the light begins to shine brighter, and we discover a pathway through the valley that leads to a place of rest and restoration in His Spirit. Here is how the writer of Hebrews shared God’s faithfulness, that has been expressed to Abraham, and promised to us.

  • “When God made his promise to Abraham, he backed it to the hilt, putting his own reputation on the line. He said, “I promise that I’ll bless you with everything I have—bless and bless and bless!” Abraham stuck it out and got everything that had been promised to him. When people make promises, they guarantee them by appeal to some authority above them so that if there is any question that they’ll make good on the promise, the authority will back them up. When God wanted to guarantee his promises, he gave his word, a rock-solid guarantee—God can’t break his word. And because his word cannot change, the promise is likewise unchangeable. We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline (ANCHOR!), reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post as high priest for us, in the order of Melchizedek.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭6:18-20‬ ‭MSG‬‬

So, whatever challenge you are facing, whatever sorrow you are enduring, whatever situation appears to be hopeless –

Run to the ONE who is always faithful, always loving, always merciful. Cling to His promises and to His unchangeable Word! Run for your life – into the loving arms of your Heavenly Father! He is waiting for you, and He will never forsake you!

He is truly an ANCHOR FOR LIFE!

In Jesus Name!

About Kirk's Devotional Journal

Kirk L. Zehnder is the Founder of Resurrection Christian Outreach. RCO is a ministry that promotes the growth and vitality of the local church through speaking engagements, seminars, various media tools, and written curriculum and books. This ministry was started over 35 years ago by Kirk as a means to strengthen the church that he was pastoring. It grew as Kirk began to share these tools with other churches. Today many of the materials are being used by local churches both nationally and internationally. Kirk's Devotional Journal is a result of struggling with Bible reading programs that never seemed to work. Kirk feels the Lord helped him discover an easy-to-follow program to Read, Reflect, Pray, and Journal through the Bible in one year. This program is called L.I.F.E. Unlike other programs there are no dates to follow. You can miss a day and still complete your reading. You never feel like the dates and verses you missed are chasing you. You are free to enjoy your daily Biblical journey and listen to the voice of The Lord. For more information on the L.I.F.E. plan, send an email to Kirk is also available for speaking engagements, seminars, and retreats.
