RELIGION -or- RELATIONSHIP?

OBSERVATION: Religion or Relationship? This is the choice that stands before each one of us today. It is the choice for the Christian and the non-Christian alike. Everyone who desires to know God, understand a higher power, or attain knowledge, has this choice. The pathway of religion is a pathway of work and effort. It is filled with self sufficiency, pride, and a judgmental spirit against those who do not choose the same path. The pathway of relationship is a pathway of freedom and enlightenment. It alone leads to the desired destination of true wisdom and understanding.

So where does one start? Religion points us to man made steps. Relationship points us to the Creator of all things. John reminds us Who this is.

  • “In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were made through him. Nothing that has been made was made without him. Life was in him, and that life was the light for all people. The light shines in the darkness. But the darkness has not understood it…The Word became a human being. He made his home with us. We have seen his glory. It is the glory of the one and only Son. He came from the Father. And he was full of grace and truth.” (‭John‬ ‭1:1-5, 14‬ ‭NIRV‬‬)

“…All things were made through Him.”  Jesus is the Centerpoint of creation. He is the Eternal Word, and He alone is the true revelation of God. There is no religion, system, or discipline of study that will lead us to this relationship. Only Jesus can! Jesus said – “The Father is the only one who knows the Son. And the only ones who know the Father are the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to make him known.”

So, who does Jesus choose to make known the Father? Who alone receives the privilege to walk in relationship with the Creator of all things?

  • “Some people did accept him. They believed in his name. He gave them the right to become children of God. To be a child of God has nothing to do with human parents. Children of God are not born because of human choice or because a husband wants them to be born. They are born because of what God does.” (‭‭John‬ ‭1:12-13‬ ‭NIRV‬‬)

This is so simple, most people miss it. True Christianity has never been about religion. True Christianity has always been about relationship! And it is relationship that releases all the blessings and fullness of God’s Spirit in our lives. Jesus exhorts each one of us who have believed in His name,

  • “Come to me, all of you who are tired and are carrying heavy loads. I will give you rest. Become my servants and learn from me. I am gentle and free of pride. You will find rest for your souls. Serving me is easy, and my load is light.” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11:28-30‬ ‭NIRV‬‬)

Relationship that flows from true love is not an effort, but a joy. True love brings rest for one’s soul. True love flows freely, easily, and without adding heavy burdens. Relationship, not religion, is the only thing that deepens and fosters true love!

Lord, help me to walk in relationship with You today! Help me to walk in true love!

In Jesus Name!
