JOHN 1:4: “He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity.”
OBSERVATION: I love Christmas lights! Each year we watch with anticipation as a local furniture store in our town sets up the most wonderful display of Christmas lights I think I have ever seen. There are two large buildings, and each one is lit to perfection with lights wrapped around trees, statuary, figurines, and the building. Every year they add something and it grows more spectacular and brings joy each time you drive by it. I love Christmas lights!
When I read this verse this morning I thought – no wonder I love Christmas lights. Christmas lights are set up to remind us of the one true light that came into the world on that very special day over 2000 years ago! Think about it, how many people still have a birthday that is celebrated by nations all over the world – after 2000 years have passed? There really must be something extra special about this person. In fact there is – He alone is the light of the world!
As I pondered on this a bit more, I realized that this was not simply a symbolic statement. Jesus is not simply the one who enlightened our understanding with His truth. Yes, He did this, but He did much more. He created all the light we have in the world. He created the sun, the moon, the stars, and everything that brings light!
- “Then God said, “Let there be light!” So there was light. God saw the light was good. So God separated the light from the darkness. God named the light day, and the darkness he named night. There was evening, then morning—the first day.” (Genesis 1:3-5 GW)
- “In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was already with God in the beginning. Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him. He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity.” (John 1:1-4 GW)
And as you continue to read the Scripture, like the store in our town that keeps adding lights each year, the revelation of Scripture continues to bring wonder to our lives. Jesus not only created the light – HE IS THE LIGHT! His very being, nature, and essence is the light. There is coming a day when the sun will be no more, when the moon and the stars will not be needed. We read of this in the Book of Revelation.
- “There will no longer be any curse. The throne of God and the lamb will be in the city. His servants will worship him and see his face. His name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night, and they will not need any light from lamps or the sun because the Lord God will shine on them. They will rule as kings forever and ever.” (Revelation 22:3-5 GW)
Can you imagine that day? The glory of God (Father) and the lamb (Jesus) will shine so brightly that we will not even need the sun!
Now that will be some Christmas light show!
So do we have to wait until them to enjoy His light? Absolutely not! Jesus’ light now shines in every heart and life that receives Him as Lord and Savior. And here is the really awesome part – He wants us to be His Christmas lights to a dark and hurting world. In a world filled with sin, hatred, and hopelessness, Jesus calls to each one of His sons and daughters –
- “You are light for the world. A city cannot be hidden when it is located on a hill. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket. Instead, everyone who lights a lamp puts it on a lamp stand. Then its light shines on everyone in the house. In the same way let your light shine in front of people. Then they will see the good that you do and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 GW)
Lord, this Christmas season, I thank you for all the wonderful celebrations that remind me of Your light. Each time I see a house lit with lights, each time I drive by my favorite store display, help me to remember Your words. Help me to truly be a shining light this season to those who have not found the hope of eternal life. Help me to truly shine among all my brothers and sisters in Christ to remind them of the true light. This Christmas season, add some additional lights to my understanding of Your Word and help me shine!
I love Christmas lights!!
In Jesus Name!
