BEFORE YOU RUSH OUT FOR “BLACK FRIDAY”…

020c3271-c74d-4a9e-91e2-829b5f9330f1-3282-00000415f4a15663_tmpPROVERBS 3:13-18: “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom and the one who obtains understanding. The profit ⌊gained⌋ from ⌊wisdom⌋ is greater than the profit ⌊gained⌋ from silver. Its yield is better than fine gold. ⌊Wisdom⌋ is more precious than jewels, and all your desires cannot equal it. Long life is in ⌊wisdom’s⌋ right hand. In ⌊wisdom’s⌋ left hand are riches and honor. ⌊Wisdom’s⌋ ways are pleasant ways, and all its paths lead to peace. ⌊Wisdom⌋ is a tree of life for those who take firm hold of it. Those who cling to it are blessed.” (GW)‭‭

OBSERVATION: “Are you ready to retire?” These are words that at one time in my life seemed so far away. It is funny how quickly the years go by. I recently had an appointment with my financial advisor. As we looked over my investment portfolio, this question became even more relevant. However, as I read these verses in Proverbs I realize that there is something more important than my financial portfolio. The most important portfolio that I need to review, on a daily basis, is my wisdom and understanding portfolio.

There is one thing that is certain regarding financial investments- they are not eternal, and they are subject to changes in the market and our world. However, my investments in God’s wisdom and understanding are eternal. There is nothing of this world that I will take with me when I die – except the wisdom and understanding I acquire in the Lord. Listen to how Solomon explains the importance of wisdom and understanding to his son.

  • The profit gained by wisdom and understanding is greater than gold or silver.
  • The beauty of wisdom and understanding exceeds the beauty of precious jewels.
  • The reward of wisdom and understanding is long life, and the true riches and honor of the soul.
  • The pathway of wisdom and understanding leads to peace.
  • The destination of wisdom and understanding is life.
  • The fruit of wisdom and understanding is being blessed.

Today is traditionally known as “Black Friday”. It is the day when all retailers clamor for those initial sales of the Christmas Holiday. We just finish giving thanks – and then we rush to fight over those things that we do not have. When you stand back and look at it – there is not much wisdom and understanding in this.

God’s treasure chest of wisdom and understanding is not available just once a year. There is no sale that you need to rush to. His heart is opened continually to give wisdom and understanding to the one who asks, to the heart that hungers, to the soul that thirsts. Everything else in this world will be replaced by the next greatest and best. Cars will one day take their final journey on flatbed trucks to become part of a scrap metal graveyard. And that mobile phone we desperately think we need will be obsolete in just a few weeks after we take it home.

Yet, wisdom and understanding will endure!

As we enter the holidays, as we enjoy all the gatherings and tastes of the season, let’s not forget the banqueting table of the Lord that is always set before us – the banqueting table of wisdom and understanding.

  • “Taste and see that the LORD is good. Blessed is the person who takes refuge in him.” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭34:8‬ ‭GW‬‬)

Merry Christmas! May you find the greatest gift of all – God’s wisdom and understanding! May you find Jesus!

In Jesus Name!
