ZECHARIAH 3:9-10: “Look at the stone I have set in front of Joshua. That one stone has seven eyes. I am engraving an inscription on it,” declares the LORD of Armies. “I will remove this land’s sin in a single day. On that day,” declares the LORD of Armies, “each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree.” (GW)
OBSERVATION: What is the best form of government? Is it a republic, a democracy, a monarchy, or socialism? Many have called America the last great experiment. Our founding fathers fled a tyrannical monarchical rule, and dreamt of a government based on the principles of the Bible. For almost 250 years this wonderful experiment has been taking place. And, as we face a critical election, as we see so many parts of this wonderful experiment slipping away from its original intent, we wonder – “Is there really a “best” form of government?”
Israel was founded as a theocracy. The original intent was for God to rule this nation, through His laws, administered through His chosen prophets and leaders. The Law of the Lord was perfect, but man was not. And so, with God Himself as their leader, with the perfect Law of God, with the Word of the Lord – even Israel drifted away from their original intent. The common factor was sin. Sin constantly is pulling man away from God’s original intent.
The reality is – there can be no perfect government unless sin is dealt a final blow.
When God came to earth, became a man, lived among us, and took our sins and penalty for sin on Himself through His death on the cross, sin and its power was defeated! Through faith in Jesus Christ we can be set free from the power of sin and death. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but shall have eternal life.” (John 3:16). This broke the power of sin with regard to our relationship with God, but not in our earthly struggle. There is a day coming when sin will meet its final judgment. This day is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. This is the day when the best and final form of government will be established. This is the day the prophet Zechariah writes about in Zechariah Chapter 3!
- “I will remove this land’s sin in a single day. On that day,” declares the LORD of Armies, “each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree.”
This is the day that Isaiah spoke of in his prophecy.
- “A child will be born for us. A son will be given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. He will be named: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and peace will have unlimited growth. He will establish David’s throne and kingdom. He will uphold it with justice and righteousness now and forever. The LORD of Armies is determined to do this!” (Isaiah 9:6-7 GW)
The Lord Himself will rebuke the enemy and redeem the earth. His government will be “the perfect government”. There will be no more sin, no more suffering, no more death! It will not be a republic, a democracy, a monarchy, or socialism – it will be God Himself!
- “I saw a new heaven and a new earth, because the first heaven and earth had disappeared, and the sea was gone. Then I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, dressed like a bride ready for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne say, “God lives with humans! God will make his home with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There won’t be any more death. There won’t be any grief, crying, or pain, because the first things have disappeared.” (Revelation 21:1-4 GW)
Until that day, all forms of earthly government are merely an experiment. As do many, I believe the American experiment has come as close as possible to this ideal – with sinful man at its helm. I pray that we can return back to our founding roots. I pray that we can rediscover the heart of its genius. This election day I will PRAY – VOTE – and PRAY!
And yet, I pray even more for the coming King, the Lord of Lords, Who alone can come, and in one day redeem us from our present struggle with sin, and in one day establish His Eternal Kingdom!
- “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give this testimony to you for the churches. I am the root and descendant of David. I am the bright morning star.” The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let those who hear this say, “Come!” Let those who are thirsty come! Let those who want the water of life take it as a gift…The one who is testifying to these things says, “Yes, I’m coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:16-17, 20 GW)
Come Lord Jesus!
In Jesus Name!
