img_0383EZEKIEL 1:4-6, 10: “As I looked, I saw a storm coming from the north. There was an immense cloud with flashing lightning surrounded by a bright light. The middle of the lightning looked like glowing metal. In the center of the cloud I saw what looked like four living creatures. They were shaped like humans, but each of them had four faces and four wings…Their faces looked like this: From the front, each creature had the face of a human. From the right, each one had the face of a lion. From the left, each one had the face of a bull. And from the back, each one had the face of an eagle.” (GW)‭‭

OBSERVATION: What is Foursquare? Many times people will ask me – “What is a Foursquare Church?” The term “foursquare”, although used numerous times in the King James Bible, and a common term of previous generations, is not a word or term we use often in our current culture or vernacular. However, it is a word that is filled with great meaning and hope. It defines our church family and its original roots, and holds great hope for all!

During a revival meeting in Oakland, California in 1922, the Founder of the Foursquare movement, Aimee Semple McPherson, was preaching from the “Vision of Ezekiel” in Ezekiel, 1:10. As she read the words, and came to verse 10 which says, “Their faces looked like this: From the front, each creature had the face of a human. From the right, each one had the face of a lion. From the left, each one had the face of a bull. And from the back, each one had the face of an eagle.”, she proclaimed – “Why, this is the Foursquare Gospel!” At that moment Sister Aimee saw something wonderful in the four faces of these living creatures. As she shared this with the great assembly there was a sense that they were all receiving a wonderful revelation from the Lord!

In the face of a HUMAN, Sister Aimee saw Jesus, the Son of God, who came to bear the sins of the world. Jesus, the Word of God, humbled Himself and became a man just like you and I. He lived a sinless life, fulfilled the call of true obedience to God, and died to bear the penalty of our sin as the spotless lamb of God. Rising from the dead, defeating sin and death, Jesus now offers salvation from the power and penalty of sin to all who will believe! “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16; Romans 10:8-10).

In the face of the LION, Sister Aimee saw the victorious Lion of Judah who had prevailed over sin and death and now sits at the right hand of God the Father. When John the Baptist called people to repentance, he proclaimed – “I indeed baptize you with water, but One mightier than I is coming…He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Luke 3:16). John spoke of Jesus, the Lion of Judah, who now baptizes us with the Holy Spirit! The Book of Acts proclaims – “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).

In the face of the BULL, Sister Aimee saw the burden bearing, suffering servant. The Scripture proclaims about Jesus – “…He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses” (Matthew 8:16-17). When Jesus began His earthly ministry, entering into the Synagogue, He took the Scroll of Isaiah and proclaimed – “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:17-19). Jesus Christ bore ALL of our suffering in His death on the Cross!

In the face of the EAGLE, Sister Aimee saw Jesus Christ, the Great I Am, the Lord of Lords, and the Soon Coming King of Kings! Jesus had promised His disciples that He would return to establish His Kingdom of Righteousness, and as an eagle soars in authority over the skies, so Jesus will return with the clouds to complete His work of redemption. Jesus Himself proclaims – “And behold, I am coming quickly, and my reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to His work. I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” (Revelation 22:12-13). Rest assured, Jesus Christ will return again! When He returns, those who have confessed Him as their Lord and Savior, will rule and reign with Him for all eternity!

This is the Foursquare Gospel! This is the Foursquare Hope! It is so much more than the name of a denomination. It is the proclamation of Jesus! And it is Good News!

In Jesus Name!
