IS THERE HOPE FOR AMERICA?

AMOS 5:14-15: “Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.” (ESV)‬‬

OBSERVATION: Is there hope for America? As we look at the current condition of our land, the increase of violence, and the upside down morality, one can easily lose heart. Granted, if America continues on the path it is on, there is little hope for anything but more judgment. In the book of Amos we see how the Lord allowed small trials as a beginning of His call to Israel to repent. However, these small trials were ignored. As the trials increased, surely they would repent. Yet, they continued in their hardness of heart. And yet the Lord continued to call them back to Himself. The Lord is also calling America back to Himself.

I am not trying to suggest that America, its’ government, or its’ people are holy within themselves. Neither is America the new “Israel” as some have suggested. Yet, to ignore America’s special favor and place in the history of the past few centuries would be to ignore history. The founding fathers desired to build a government and a land that would reflect the values that are clearly espoused in the Scriptures. As imperfect as America is, it has been the bastion for hope and freedom in the world as we know it. It has been the voice for the oppressed and forgotten. It has risked everything to protect the freedom and liberty of its’ people, and the people of the world.

Yet, America has lost its’ way. It has forgotten its’ moral compass. Isaiah cried out – “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭5:20‬ ‭ESV‬) When we abandon the basic principles of morality outlined in the 10 Commandments, when we assault the very foundation of society, marriage and family, and when we cease to speak up for the innocent, the unborn, and the elderly, we are on a slippery slope toward judgment. So where is the hope?

What if we began to look at it in a completely different manner? What if we did not sit back in our recliners, with our remote controls in hand, and listen to pundits tell us what is wrong and who can fix it? What if we began to live out our Biblical convictions, one issue at a time, one day at a time – and in broad daylight?‬ What if we simply began to practice the Word of the Lord given through Amos?

  • “Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.” (And America!)

Can one solitary life change the entire course of a nation. History is replete with examples and validation that the answer is YES! Will my life and obedience be the one that God uses to turn the tides in our nation? We will never know until we get engaged and daily obey!

Lord, grant me the grace to stand courageously for Your Truth in the midst of a world that calls evil – good, and good – evil. May my simple obedience become a shining light that joins with other lights in our land – until revival comes! Be gracious and merciful to our nation and bring a great awakening once again.

In Jesus Name!
