I PETER 1:3-5: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (ESV)‭‭

OBSERVATION: Do you have a “Heavenly 401K”? This may seem like a strange question, but it really a very Biblical question. Jesus put it this way:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:19-21‬ ‭ESV)

Our “Heavenly 401K” are the treasures we are laying up in heaven through faith.

Peter begins his epistle with an exhortation to the saints living throughout the Dispersion – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…” What is this hope? It is our “Heavenly 401K”. It is our inheritance in Jesus Christ that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is our eternal reward that is kept and guarded by the power of God in heaven for the believer. It is the deposits of the fruits and actions of faith, the activity of salvation in our lives that will fully be revealed when we stand before Jesus Christ in heaven.

Recently we had another bad week in the Stock Market. One of my portfolios dropped almost 8%. If you watch the ups and downs of the stock market it can really make you begin to worry. Whenever you hear advertising for investments it will always be followed by a long disclaimer of the risks involved in investing – and this after they tell you how much you have a chance of making! Anyone who has invested in the Stock Market has experienced these disappointing downturns. Yet – there is no downturn in our life of faith! There is no depreciation in our heavenly investment! It is guarded by our Lord Jesus Christ. He is watching over our labor of love and faith and guarding our investment until we enter into HIs presence.

Many of the old hymns used to sing about this future glory. We don’t sing about it much anymore. I have often wondered why. Perhaps it is because we live in the moment today. We want everything instantly. We are like Thomas many times, we want to see something before we believe it. Yet our “Heavenly 401K” is just a real as anything we can see or touch with our hand. Jesus knew this would be a hard concept for his disciples to grasp so He reassured them before His death with these words:

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms.  If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” (‭‭John‬ ‭14:1-3‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

We have been born again unto a “living hope”. It is a hope that brings with it abundant living in this present life, and a heavenly investment that is truly out of this world! We all have the opportunity to live our life by faith and make daily investments in heaven. These investments of love, faith, and obedience are not works that earn us God’s favor, they are investments in the Kingdom that we are already a part of by grace through faith. When I receive my pay check I have a choice. What I do with it does not earn it again, but it does determine what it will produce. If I spend it all for the moment – I have my reward. If I invest it for the future, I lay aside that which is needed for the future. It is the same with faith!

Lord, this morning, help me to invest my faith wisely. Help me to hear Your voice and joyfully obey. Let me rejoice in the testing of my faith knowing that the proving of my faith is simply the compounding of interest in my “Heavenly 401K”. Thank You for Your great work of salvation in my life! Thank You for the living hope I stand in today!

In Jesus Name!
