HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT WORK?

JOHN 16:7-10:  “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.” (ESV)

OBSERVATION:  How does the Holy Spirit minister in the hearts of man?  How does the Holy Spirit minister to/in my heart?  Many times our understanding of this is a bit fuzzy.  We cannot see the Holy Spirit and our concept is that He works invisibly, and somewhat intangibly.  This leads some to treat the Holy Spirit as more of a “force” than a “person”.  Yet, the Holy Spirit is not a force, He is a “person”, the third person of the Godhead.  So how does the Holy Spirit work in the hearts of man.

First, it is important to note that Jesus emphasizes that the Holy Spirit will come to be with us in His absence.  In fact, Jesus uses this truth as a comfort to His disciples.  “…for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you.  But if I go, I will send him to you.”  Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit in our lives as the “Helper”, the “Comforter”, the “Spirit of Truth”.  Jesus said – “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (‭John‬ ‭16‬:‭13-15‬ ESV)

In Jesus’ absence it is the Holy Spirit who will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.  This is a whole study within itself.  However, the initial question is how will the Holy Spirit do this?  He will do this through TRUTH!  This is not a promise of the Holy Spirit’s invisible, covert, behind the scenes working in the hearts of man.  This is a promise of the Holy Spirit working through the Church as they are guided into all truth, as they are instructed into all truth, as they exemplify all truth, and as they proclaim all truth – in love!

The Holy Spirit does not hover over the hearts of man – He “indwells” the hearts of believers.  Jesus said to His disciples – “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.: (‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭15-17‬ ESV)  The key words are – “You know Him, for he dwells with you and WILL BE IN YOU.”  Who will the Spirit of truth be in?  Those who love Jesus and keep His commandments.  Those who believe and are entrusted with the truth.  The Holy Spirit indwells and works through the life of the Church (believers) as she (they) proclaims the truth!

Father, thank you for the precious gift of Your Son.  Jesus, thank you for giving Your life for my full redemption and sending the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Holy Spirit, thank you for revealing Truth (Jesus – John 14:6) in my life.  Lord, grant me the Grace to walk according to Your Truth.  Holy Spirit, empower me to proclaim Truth (Jesus – John 14:6) through my actions, my love, and my words.  In Jesus Name!
