LUKE 1:34-37: “Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” 35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
OBSERVATION: “How can this be?” Have you ever asked this question? Faced with a seemingly impossible situation, and confronted with the promises of God, like Mary – do you find it hard to believe that they can really come true? The angel Gabriel told Mary the same thing he told Zacharias – “…with God nothing will be impossible.”
The miracles in Mary and Elizabeth’s life were very different, but they were still miracles. With Elizabeth the Lord opened her womb and blessed Zacharias so that they could conceive a child normally. With Mary it was a total miraculous touch of the Lord with no human intervention. We could call it a “creative” miracle. Without any human assistance the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary and God entered into this world, first as a human embryo, then as a human child, and then He fulfilled his ministry as fully man and fully God. This indeed was a miracle!
Both situations seemed impossible. Both were outside the reach of those involved. One was a womb that was dead and brought back to life. The other was the womb of a virgin that had never known a man and now held the Son of God waiting to be born. To the skeptic both of these seem to be but idle fairy tales created by man. Yet, to the Spirit filled believer they are reminders of the true reality of faith. With God – NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!
This truth does not mean that the Lord will always do a “creative” miracle in our life. Nor does it mean that there will always be supernatural answers to all of our prayers. However, it does remind us that we are never to limit God! Jesus said – “All things are possible to them that believe.” Faith opens our lives to the full possibilities of heaven entering into our lives. It takes us from our human limitations right into the throne room of His unlimited provision and power. We are delivered from despair into hope. We are filled with joy and expectation as we look unto the Lord and await the fulfillment of His promise.
Mary’s miracle was never to be repeated, but God is still in the miracle business! I have witnessed His miraculous touch upon my life and family numerous times, and in countless lives around me during my ministry. I am expecting to witness it on a continuing basis until the day He calls me home, or He returns for His church. Lord, thank You that You are the same Yesterday, Today, and Forever (Hebrews 13:8). Thank You that as we abide in You – NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE! In Jesus Name!
