“For who has despised the day of small things?
For these seven rejoice to see
The plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.
They are the eyes of the LORD,
Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”
OBSERVATION: When you look over your life, what events hold the greatest meaning to you? Are they the “Big” events – or the “small”, unprompted, spontaneous events that you never could have planned, but you never could replace. The moment when your child looks at you and says “I love you”. The moment when you look into the eyes of your spouse and you exchange that “twinkle” without words that says volumes more than words could ever express. The moment you are singing a song to the Lord, one word grabs your heart, and you begin to weep as you feel the overwhelming presence of the Lord. We all seem to desire the “Big” events, but in reality it is the “small” things in life that hold the most value.
As Zerubbabel looked upon the mountain of ruin that once was the Temple, as those around looked at what seemed to be an impossible task, the Lord proclaims – “For who has despised the day of small things?” The Lord looked upon this rubble, and He looked upon Zerubbabel with a totally different perspective. The Lord saw this situation through the eyes of His Spirit, the eyes of Promise, the eyes of Faith. The Lord rejoiced in simply seeing the plumb line in the hands of Zerubbabel, because it was the Lord who had proclaimed to him – “..This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts. Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain! And he shall bring forth the capstone with shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” (Zechariah 4:6-7)
It is in the “small” things that the seed for the Lord’s “Big” things are realized. Each great work of the Lord begins with a single step. We should not look at this “little” step and be discouraged, nor should we look at it and compare it to what others have experienced or accomplished. This “little” step is God’s seed of Promise in our lives for the fulfillment of His purposes in and through us. He looks upon the “little” things in our lives and rejoices, because He knows His Promise, He knows His Power! The eyes of the Lord rejoice to see His sons and daughters take the “little” steps that will lead them into the Lord’s “Big” and eternal purposes for their lives.
Lord, this morning help me to rejoice over the “little” things in my life. May I not neglect the “seed” that You have planted simply because I am impatient and want to see the “crop” before its’ time. May I faithfully attend to Your seed. Keep my eyes upon Your calling for my life. Give me Grace to resist the temptation of comparing myself to others. Help me to understand that I am not in a contest with anyone – but I am simply called to steward the “little” things that You have placed in my life. Lord, thank you for the “little” things You have given me! I rejoice with You over these new beginnings! In Jesus Name!
