ISAIAH 11:6-9: “The wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the goat. The calf, the young lion, and the fattened calf will be together, and a child will lead them. The cow and the bear will graze, their young ones will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like cattle. An infant will play beside the cobra’s pit, and a toddler will put his hand into a snake’s den. They will not harm or destroy each other on my entire holy mountain, for the land will be as full of the knowledge of the Lord as the sea is filled with water.” CSB

OBSERVATION: What will usher in man’s dream of a Utopia? A world where energy is abundant, war is a thing of the past, and there is enough for every person on the face of the earth. Is it the “Green New Deal?” Is it a specific political party or platform? Or, is it something entirely different?

My wife and I love animals. We especially love cats. We currently have three cats, and all of them are rescue animals. Whenever we go to the zoo I love to look at the large majestic cats. I think how wonderful it would be to be able to enter their enclosure and give them a big hug. Then common sense takes over, as I realize this is not possible. Yet, isn’t it curious that we all have this instinct to want to be with these large predatory animals?

I wondered about this as I read these verses from Isaiah. There is a coming day when this desire will become a reality. The animals of prey will no longer hunt. They will graze grass like the cow, and it says – “…a child shall lead them.” The common enemies in nature will become friends. Venomous snakes will become an infant’s pet. And there will no longer be sound of war in all of the land. What will bring about this marvelous change?

This desire for Utopia is resident in every man and woman walking on the earth. This is what gives us the hope of a better future. It is what drives us to save the planet and promote peace in the land. And, even though all of these things are noble pursuits and should be continued, they will not usher in the Utopia that we all so desperately seek. There is only one event in history, which is still yet to come, that will bring the Utopia we all hunger and thirst for. It is the return of Jesus Christ!

Isaiah 11 does not begin with the promise of Utopia. Rather, it begins with the promise of the Savior!

  • Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him — a Spirit of wisdom and understanding, a Spirit of counsel and strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. His delight will be in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, he will not execute justice by what he hears with his ears, but he will judge the poor righteously and execute justice for the oppressed of the land. He will strike the land with a scepter from his mouth, and he will kill the wicked with a command from his lips. Righteousness will be a belt around his hips; faithfulness will be a belt around his waist.” Isaiah 11:1-5 CSB

Jesus came to the earth the first time as a humble infant, God in human flesh. He came to identify with His creation, experience all the suffering we encounter each day, and give Himself as a sacrifice for our sins as He died upon the cross. He rose again the third day and when He ascended into heaven the angels proclaimed,

  • “While he was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.” Acts 1:10-11 CSB

The Scriptures are replete with the promise of Jesus Christ’s return. The entire book of Revelation is the unfolding of all the events that will take place leading up to this day. When Jesus returns He will come to judge the world and to establish His reign of righteousness. He will ultimately usher in a New Heaven and a New Earth. This will be the dawn of the true Utopia that all men and women hunger for. And, only those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord will be able to enjoy this Utopia.

This wonderful day is truly coming! There will be a time when I will be able to hug one of those big cats I so admire without the fear of being killed. In fact, all killing, suffering, sorrow, and injustice will be wiped away. It will not be a nation or a political party that will usher in this day. It will be the King of kings, the Lord of lords, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! And it will be a glorious day!

  • “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away. Then the one seated on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new.” He also said, “Write, because these words are faithful and true.” Revelation 21:1-5 CSB

What can I do to prepare for this glorious day? I can put my trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. I can live my life according to the Word of God. I can invest my life in telling others about Jesus. And, I can begin to walk in the promise of His presence, the very presence that will usher in Utopia.

Lord, as I wait for Your blessed return, may I be found walking in Your love, manifesting Your grace and mercy, and proclaiming the Gospel of salvation. Until all who are called believe!

In Jesus Name!
