A PRAYER FOR HURRICANE IRMA AND HARVEY…

JOB 37:11-13: “He also loads the clouds with moisture, scattering his lightning with the clouds. It whirls about in circles at his direction to accomplish all that he commands throughout the surface of the entire world, whether for discipline on his land or to demonstrate his gracious love, he causes it to be realized.” (ISV)

OBSERVATION: Lord of all Creation, Sovereign God, in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, and as we watch Hurricane Irma rushing to the Florida coastline – I cry out to You for mercy. I acknowledge that You are God, and that with just a word You can calm the strongest storm.

Our sins as a nation are many. In the scales of justice we deserve discipline and judgment. However, You are a God of compassion, rich in mercy, and full of loving kindness. Turn these storms into an opportunity to display Your mighty power and to demonstrate Your gracious mercy and love.

I pray that as a nation we would lay down our swords. In the Civil War we killed one another with military weapons. Brother against brother, we died for our anger toward one another. Now we are battling again with words of hate and anger. Many are taking up weapons and inflicting physical harm. We have not learned from the past, we are repeating it. Only a sovereign outpouring of Your Holy Spirit can turn us back toward You once again.

Pour out Your Spirit again on this land. Bring another Great Awakening. Turn our weapons of hatred and anger into tools of love and forgiveness. Save to the uttermost. Deliver those who are oppressed. Give sight to those who are blind. Bring forth a mighty revival that will turn millions of hearts throughout this world back to You.

Lord, we humble ourselves under Your Mighty Hand. Forgive us, heals us, protect us, and deliver us from evil. Rise up and speak “…Peace be still…” to the storms we face, both on our seas, and in our land. Pour out Your mercy upon ALL in the pathway of Hurricane Irma, and upon those rebuilding from the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. We ask this in sincere prayer, O God of all Creation!

In Jesus Mighty Name!

  • “Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.” ‭‭II Chronicles‬ ‭7:12-16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

In Cape Town, South Africa, we are experiencing a critical drought. Only a few weeks’ water left. We had a storm early June, that had caused so much damage, yet very little rain. Huge waves, 12 metres high, crashed over the promenade and into the streets. The drought was ignored by the Mayor and Premier, so they didn’t implement water restrictions soon enough or severely enough. Four million lives are at risk….and imagine the humanitarian disaster that can potentially unfold, even civil war. And yet we find fault with each other, pride and arrogance abound. There really is little sign of repentance. God is trying to get our attention but even Christian radio stations play Him down, going on as if nothing happened. Such is man’s arrogance. Even in how we drive, point fingers at others, is an indication of exactly how far we are from repenting. So the drought continues……
