JOHN 1:4-5: “In him was life, and that life brought light to humanity. And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.” (ISV)
OBSERVATION: The light that never dims! This is the thought that came to my mind and heart as I read these verses in the opening chapter of the Gospel of John. Jesus is the light. The life that He lived brought light to every man and every woman. And Jesus continues to bring His light to everyone who will believe.
But what if they do not believe?
Have you ever walked into a dark room, not knowing where the light switch is? This happens to me often when I travel. Entering new hotel rooms in each destination always brings about this challenge. Even though I don’t know where the light switch is, it does not mean there is no light. The light still exists, and the darkness of the room has not nullified its existence. All it takes is a flip of the switch and the light is engaged. And when it is – the darkness always is dispelled!
There are those who do not believe in the life, teachings, or the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They live in a state of spiritual darkness. However, their refusal to believe does not nullify the light. Jesus Christ came to this world to overcome the darkness of sin through His death and resurrection. When you read the Biblical account about His death, it was filled with darkness. However, when you read the Biblical account about His resurrection, it was filled with light. When Jesus rose from the dead, the light of eternal life was turned on for all who will believe, and the darkness has never put it out!
- “However, to all who received him, those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God’s children, who were born, not merely in a genetic sense, nor from lust, nor from man’s desire, but from the will of God.” John 1:12-13 (ISV)
God desires to share His light with all men and women. Yet, He never forces anyone to believe, He simply calls them. We all are invited to freely receive the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Grace calls us to Jesus, faith enables us to “flip the switch” and believe, and God’s mercy saves us and transforms us from the kingdom of darkness, to the kingdom of light. Once the light has been turned on – the darkness no longer has power over us. We are not only delivered from the guilt and penalty of sin, but also from its power. We now have the ability to walk in the light, as He is in the light!
- “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” I John 1:5-7 NKJV
Yet, none of us is able to perfectly walk in the light. Along the way we stumble and fall. We forget that the power of sin has been broken, and sometimes we revert back to our old patterns. Has the darkness overcome the light? Never! When this happens we have the promise of His light once again breaking through our darkness and leading us back into the power of His overcoming life!
- “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (bring us back into the light).” I John 1:8-9 NKJV
- “How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.” Psalms 36:7-9 NKJV
Lord, thank you for the light of Christ which shines brightly in the darkness! Thank you for extending Your light to me, and delivering me from the darkness of my brokenness and sin. Give me the grace to walk daily in your light and to continually be transformed by Your love. Help me to point others to the light of Jesus Christ so that they too may believe and enter into the light of His love!
